Support with your digitalisation decision

EMMA vs. UiPath® - your RPA decision aid

Robotic process automation: yes, but which tool?

Robot Process Automation (RPA) is considered a key factor in the digitalisation and digital transformation of modern companies. Two prominent solutions on the market are EMMA (from WIANCO OTT Robotics) and UiPath®. Both promise to efficiently automate repetitive processes and thus reduce the workload of employees - but how do they differ in key aspects? Below you will find a well-founded and objective comparison of these two RPA platforms, focussing on integration, artificial intelligence (AI) and ease of implementation. The aim is to provide a professional decision-making aid for managers who are evaluating automation as part of their digitalisation strategy.

Different approaches to automation

Artificial intelligence - different approaches to intelligent automation

Both EMMA and UiPath® advertise AI-supported functions, but their approaches differ. In essence, the aim is to transform rigid automation into intelligent process automation - in other words, to enhance RPA with AI in such a way that more complex, variable tasks can be mastered.

EMMA is explicitly designed as a cognitive AI platform. Artificial intelligence is at the centre here and enables EMMA to act with human-like perception and decision-making capabilities. In concrete terms, this means that EMMA has computer vision capabilities, meaning it can recognise and interpret screen content. "Just like you, EMMA can flexibly see and recognise all elements on the desktop, e.g. icons, files, buttons, menus...". This makes the automation robust against changes - even if colours, shapes or positions of UI elements change, EMMA finds its way. This goes so far that EMMA can even automate on the basis of a remote desktop connection, within a Citrix environment or even using a screen camera image. Admittedly: While the options of using a remote desktop connection or Citrix environment certainly offer interesting advantages and more flexibility, the latter is rarely the case, but is used by Vodafone, for example, in combination with a robot for testing mobile phones.

EMMA also masters Natural Language Processing (NLP): it "can read what is on the desktop or in any source such as e-mails, Excel, PDF files..." and recognise texts as well as figures and graphics. Based on this perceived information, the next step is understanding - EMMA can recognise patterns and apply rules to make decisions (e.g. understand business rules and determine which step to take next). Finally, EMMA executes these decisions through actions (clicks, taps, scrolls) to continue the process. This entire cycle - perceive, read, understand, act - runs autonomously and reflects how AI can utilise the RPA capabilities of EMMA 's RPA capabilities. It is also worth noting that EMMA can integrate other AI services: "EMMA can even use any other AI solution (e.g. generative AI) and seamlessly integrate it into the processes.". In practical terms, this means that EMMA could, for example, use a chatbot or GPT service to make a complex decision and use the result directly in the process. This holistic AI approach makes EMMA more than just a classic bot - it is more of a cognitive assistant that combines rules and learning. Artificial intelligence is the engine here to fully exploit the potential of digitalisation.

UiPath® integrates AI functions at various points in its automation ecosystem. UiPath® 's strategy is to use AI modules in a targeted manner to expand the capabilities of the software robots. A key feature is AI Computer Vision, which enables UiPath® robots to understand screen surfaces with human-like accuracy - comparable to EMMA's visual perception. In addition, UiPath® offers the Document Understanding function, which combines AI models and OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to read information from invoices, forms or PDF documents, for example. Natural language processing is also covered, for example by integrated tools for communication analysis (UiPath® Communications Mining recognises patterns in unstructured texts, e.g. emails) and by the option of integrating machine learning models. In fact, UiPath® sees itself as a pioneer of Intelligent Process Automation (IPA), in which RPA and AI merge. UiPath® therefore not only utilises its own AI components, but also integrates cognitive services from leading AI providers (e.g. Google, IBM, Microsoft, ABBYY) into its platform. For example, users can integrate cloud services for image recognition, speech recognition or translations provided by these providers as required. Recent developments show that UiPath® is increasingly incorporating Generative AI - for example by integrating GPT models to make automation even more flexible (e.g. automatic generation of text responses or code suggestions using AI). To summarise, UiPath® pursues a modular AI approach: basic RPA functions are supplemented by AI modules wherever they add value (seeing, reading, understanding). The result is also intelligent automation that goes beyond pure if-then rules and can tackle more complex tasks.

The bottom line when it comes to AI: UiPath® offers a broad AI toolkit within its platform: from computer vision and document processing to the integration of external AI services. Companies that already use AI services or want to rely on specific AI functions will find a flexible environment in UiPath® to orchestrate them.
EMMA on the other hand, embodies cognitive AI out-of-the-box. This gives it significantly more flexibility from the ground up without taking away the possibility of instrumenting other AI functionalities such as GenAI in the form of extension modules. The platform is also designed to mimic many human abilities and make decisions without additional training. This autonomy of the AI also allows specialist users to automate processes that were previously reserved for programmers.
Both approaches contribute to digital transformation by making RPA smarter and more powerful - however, EMMA can score points here with significantly more options.

Integration into your existing IT landscape

Integration into existing IT landscapes
- Seamless and flexible

One of the most important questions when choosing RPA software is how well it can be integrated into the existing system landscape. Both solutions, EMMA and UiPath®, take different approaches to enable seamless integration into your digital landscape.

EMMA from WIANCO focuses on cross-application automation without special interfaces. Thanks to cognitive AI, EMMA can operate practically any system in the same way as a human user - regardless of manufacturer or technology. The big advantage: "No interfaces required thanks to cognitive artificial intelligence". This means that EMMA simulates user actions and interacts directly with the user interfaces (GUI) of various applications. Changes to legacy systems or complex API programming are unnecessary in many cases. EMMA immediately operates any system like a human: it can operate any programme and any website, read data from a wide variety of sources and make decisions based on this. This universal approach minimises the integration effort, especially for older applications without existing interfaces. Companies can therefore integrate existing software into their automation processes without having to intervene deeply in the IT infrastructure. For example, one customer reports an immediate and continuous increase in efficiency and productivity since integrating EMMA into their work processes - an indication of how smoothly EMMA can fit into existing workflows.

UiPath®, on the other hand, offers a wide range of integration options - from the user interface to the backend API. The platform supports both UI and API integration, which means that UiPath®-robots can interact with applications via the user interface and communicate directly via interfaces. There are ready-made activities or connectors for almost all common company systems (ERP, CRM, databases, e-mail servers, etc.), which facilitate the connection. UiPath® has specialised components for SAP, mainframes or Microsoft apps, for example, and an integration service that offers numerous pre-built connectors to cloud services. UiPath® also provides open APIs that developers can use to integrate the platform into their own applications or connect external tools (e.g. Jira, ServiceNow). An official statement puts it in a nutshell: UiPath® enables "best-in-class UI and API integration" to implement automations across multiple systems. Companies that already rely on the platforms supported by UiPath® can benefit from low integration hurdles.

To summarise: UiPath® scores with a variety of interfaces and API support, enabling both robot process automation via interfaces and deep integration into software systems.
EMMA stands out with its no-interface approach - the cognitive AI takes over the interaction as if a human were sitting in front of the screen, which enables rapid integration without adjustments and pays off particularly in cases where UiPath® does not provide ready-made connectors.
In both cases, companies can drive forward their digitalisation measures, but the choice depends on the existing IT landscape and integration strategy. Modern system landscape with applications supported by UiPath®? Then UiPath® certainly offers advantages. Legacy applications without APIs? This is where EMMA really comes into its own.

Fastest introduction and onboarding

Easy introduction and fast onboarding - automation success in a short time

Technical capabilities are one thing - but how quickly can a company get up and running with the solution in question? Factors such as user-friendliness, available training and the provider's general onboarding strategy all play a role here. After all, an RPA platform only realises its value when users in the company can use it effectively. Both EMMA and UiPath® aim to make it as easy as possible to get started, but they do so in different ways.

EMMA positions itself strongly as an easy-to-use tool, even for non-technical people. It is a no-code RPA platform designed to enable specialist departments to automate independently without the need for in-depth IT knowledge. A look at the stated training times shows how low the entry hurdle is: After just 30 minutes to 1 hour of training, employees without an IT background can automate their first simple processes; very complex processes can be implemented after around 2 days of training. This value is impressive and underlines the approach of democratising automation. WIANCO and its partners also offer corresponding training courses (EMMA Academy) to enable customers to act quickly. In practice, this means that a company can realise a pilot project with EMMA within a few days - from training the key users to the finished automation system. Thanks to EMMA's intuitive user interface (a graphical studio), processes are modelled using drag-and-drop and trained using the AI components, which keeps the learning curve flat. EMMA advertises with the slogan "Anyone can automate processes" and the experience of specialist departments creating their own RPA bots without any programming knowledge. The onboarding phase at EMMA is therefore short and practice-orientated: In just two days, users should be able to "automate any process that they can explain to another person". This shows how strongly the focus is on usability and rapid value creation - an important point for companies that want to see rapid success in their digitalisation initiative.

UiPath® has also done a lot in recent years to make it easier to get started, although the platform was originally adopted more by developers and IT departments. UiPath® now offers StudioX, a user-friendly version of its development environment, specifically designed for citizen developers (i.e. specialised users). The idea behind it: Even employees without programming skills can use StudioX to create automations using a low-code approach. This approach is supported by an extensive online academy and community. The UiPath® Academy provides free training courses, including a Citizen Developer Foundation course that can be completed in around 15 hours (i.e. around two working days). In this structured learning plan, beginners learn step-by-step how to use the basics of UiPath® without having to go deep into code. In addition to online courses, there is a large RPA community and numerous partner companies that offer training and implementation support - for decision-makers, this means they can draw on an existing ecosystem. The actual implementation time in a company naturally depends on the scope and organisation: A small proof-of-concept with UiPath® can often be implemented in a few weeks, especially as a community edition of the software is available free of charge, which can be used to develop and test initial bots. For a company-wide rollout, UiPath® recommends setting up a centre of excellence, but scaling can be done gradually, starting with individual departments or processes. Overall, a company can get started quickly with UiPath®, but depending on the user group, it may need to plan a little more initial training time than with EMMA, as the platform offers many features. However, the time invested pays off thanks to the depth of possibilities - increasingly complex automation can be implemented as experience grows.

As a result, both solutions offer a comparatively quick entry into the world of robotic process automation, but with different philosophies: EMMA impresses with an extremely short familiarisation period and is strongly aimed at specialist users who can get started straight away after minimal training. UiPath® also provides tools for beginners (StudioX, Academy courses), but benefits above all from its broad community and support landscape, which helps new users to gain a foothold. Companies looking for a very fast, decentralised introduction will find EMMA a partner that delivers results in days. Companies that want to rely on extensive resources and a global community can also get off to a quick start with UiPath®.
In any case, a well-planned start-up project, supported by the right training, is the key to successfully anchoring RPA as a transformation tool in the company.

Conclusion: Two powerful RPA solutions for your digitalisation

EMMA from WIANCO and UiPath® impressively demonstrate how robotic process automation can advance today's business processes in the course of digitalisation. Both platforms enable automation at a high level, but differ in aspects that are relevant for decision-makers:

  • Artificial intelligence: EMMA relies on in-built cognitive AI, which gives the robot quasi-human sensory perception and decision-making capabilities. UiPath® pursues a modular approach and integrates AI functionalities from its own organisation and from partners (computer vision, document understanding, third-party AI) specifically into the automation workflow. Both approaches lead to intelligent automation - the choice depends on whether you prefer EMMA as a turnkey AI with significantly greater flexibility out of the box or whether you want to use a flexible combination of different AI services.
  • Integration: EMMA operates "without integration effort" directly on interfaces and is ideal for quickly automating heterogeneous system landscapes, especially when legacy systems are involved. UiPath®, on the other hand, offers "UI and API integration" at its best - it can be deeply integrated into existing applications and comes with a wealth of connectors, which is particularly advantageous in a modern system landscape.
  • Easy introduction: EMMA scores with a very short familiarisation period for users - the first processes can be implemented after just a few hours of training. UiPath® also offers a quick start, supported by a huge community and free training resources, but may require a little more initial effort to familiarise users with the variety of tools. Both manufacturers support new customers with onboarding programmes.
  • As a no-code solution with cognitive AI, EMMA is also recognised by leading consulting firms as having a unique selling point, which has a positive impact on numerous points relevant to process automation (including user-friendliness, integration capability, data protection and maintenance effort). This assessment and the associated characteristics should always be weighed up and recognised accordingly when making a decision.

For decision-makers, this means Both EMMA and UiPath® can be a strong pillar of your digitalisation strategy. It all depends on which criteria take priority for your company. If as many modern systems as possible are to be connected directly with existing connectors, UiPath® will play to its strengths. Do you want fast, uncomplicated integration into existing processes and do you want specialist departments to get started as independently as possible? Then EMMA could be the right choice.

Both solutions drive digital transformation by combining robotic process automation with powerful features. A fair comparison shows: Your automation journey can be successful with both tools. The important thing is to know the specific requirements of your company - then you can choose the solution that offers you the greatest possible benefit on the path to digital excellence.
